Ireland Could Soon Crack Down On People Who Don’t Pay Their TV License Fee

It could be bad news for a lot of Irish people who currently hide under the bed and turn off all the lights when the TV license inspector comes around, because RTÉ director-general Dee Forbes has said that she plans to reform the licence fee collection system.

Currently, Ireland has one of the highest evasion rates in Europe, with an estimated €30 million to €40 million lost each year due to people dodging their TV license fee.

Ms Forbes also originally noted that the licence fee cost 40 cent a day, and said that “I think it’s incredible value for money,” she said.

“Quite honestly I think it should be double that.”

Don't freak out though, because she later went on to change her mind on that, so no fear of having to shell out even more for your telly.

Just be warned; it does look likely that there will be some changes coming in regards to how the fee is collected, so your once-removed, second cousin *cough cough*, who lives down the road will have to pay for his beloved viewing.

The changes comes as the national broadcaster is apparently forced to make a series of cuts, including up to 250 redundancies.
